French top diplomat reiterates Paris’ resolve to recognize Palestine

France has once again reaffirmed its commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state as part of a collective international effort, as stated by the French foreign minister on Monday. This reaffirmation further solidifies France’s stance on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine and shows their unwavering support for the Palestinian people.

During a joint conference with his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian stressed the need for a two-state solution in the Israel-Palestine conflict. He stated that France has always supported the establishment of a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace and security.

Le Drian emphasized that the recognition of a Palestinian state must be accompanied by a comprehensive peace agreement between Israel and Palestine. He called for a collective international effort to achieve this goal and urged both sides to resume negotiations in order to reach a just and lasting solution.

The French foreign minister also expressed his concern over the recent tensions in the region, particularly in Jerusalem, and the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. He condemned any acts of violence and urged all parties to exercise restraint and respect international law.

France has been a long-standing supporter of the Palestinian cause and has consistently called for the recognition of a Palestinian state. In 2014, the French parliament voted in favor of recognizing Palestine as a state, and in 2016, then-President Francois Hollande expressed his support for a two-state solution during a visit to Ramallah.

Le Drian’s reaffirmation of France’s commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state comes at a crucial time as the United States has shifted its stance on the issue. In December 2017, President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a move that was met with widespread condemnation by the international community.

In contrast, France’s stance on the matter remains unchanged. The French government firmly believes that the recognition of a Palestinian state is necessary for the peace and stability of the region. As Le Drian stated, “it is in the interest of all parties involved to have a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace and security.”

The French foreign minister’s words have been welcomed by Palestinian officials, who see it as a clear message of support and solidarity. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki expressed his appreciation for France’s unwavering support, stating that it sends a strong message to the international community to stand by the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

France’s commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state also aligns with the European Union’s position on the matter. In 2014, the EU passed a resolution calling for the recognition of a Palestinian state, and several European countries have followed France’s lead in recognizing Palestine as a state.

In addition to its political stance, France has also provided significant aid to support the Palestinian people. In 2019, France pledged 7 million euros to help the Palestinian Authority pay its civil servants’ salaries and 8 million euros to support Palestinian refugees living in Gaza and the West Bank.

In conclusion, France’s reaffirmation of its commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state is a strong message of support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination. It shows the country’s unwavering stance on the issue and its determination to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

As the international community continues to push for a two-state solution, France’s role as a mediator and supporter of the Palestinian cause is crucial. It is our hope that other countries will follow France’s lead and join in the collective effort to achieve a lasting peace in the region.
