Government is committed to jet engine development: Rajnath

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh recently announced that as of November 2025, a total of 672 winners have emerged from the 565 challenges given under the Innovation for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative. This includes an impressive 96 winners from the 77 challenges related to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

This announcement is a testament to the success and impact of the iDEX initiative, which was launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Defence with an aim to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the Indian defence sector. Under this initiative, start-ups, MSMEs, and individuals are given the opportunity to develop innovative solutions for the defence industry and compete for funding and support from the government.

Since its inception, iDEX has seen tremendous growth and has emerged as a key platform for promoting indigenization and self-reliance in the defence sector. The fact that 672 winners have been selected out of the 565 challenges given is a clear indication of the immense potential and talent in the Indian start-up ecosystem. It also showcases the Indian government’s commitment to promoting innovation and supporting the development of homegrown solutions for defence needs.

One of the major contributors to this success has been the iDEX Defence India Startup Challenge (DISC), which was launched in 2019 in partnership with the iAF, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Army. This challenge focuses on addressing specific problem statements and needs of the armed forces, providing them with cutting-edge technology and solutions.

Out of the 77 challenges related to the IAF, the most notable winners include a multi-spectral camouflage net developed by a start-up from Kochi, a portable unmanned surveillance aircraft developed by a start-up from Gujarat, and a reusable landing surface solution for unmanned aerial vehicles developed by a MSME from Maharashtra. These innovative solutions not only cater to the current needs of the IAF but also have the potential to revolutionize the defence industry and enhance the operational capabilities of our armed forces.

Moreover, apart from the monetary awards given to the winners, iDEX also provides them with an opportunity to work closely with the armed forces, giving them firsthand experience and insights into the needs and challenges faced by our defence personnel. This not only strengthens the partnership between the start-ups and the armed forces but also fosters a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

The success of iDEX and its various challenges also highlights the potential of the Indian defence industry to become a global leader in innovation and technology. With such a diverse range of solutions and ideas being developed, it is only a matter of time before Indian defence start-ups and MSMEs make a mark on the global stage.

In conclusion, the announcement made by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh regarding the emergence of 672 winners from the 565 challenges under the iDEX initiative is a significant milestone for the Indian defence sector. It not only showcases the potential and talent of our start-ups and MSMEs but also reflects the government’s commitment to promoting innovation and self-reliance in the defence industry. As we move forward, it is imperative that we continue to support and nurture such initiatives that not only benefit our armed forces but also contribute to the growth and development of our nation.
