Israeli blockade pushing Gaza to man-made mass starvation: WHO

World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has once again brought attention to the dire situation of Gaza, where man-made mass starvation is causing immense suffering to the people. In a statement on Wednesday, Ghebreyesus pointed the finger at the Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid as the main cause of this crisis.

The situation in Gaza has been dire for years, with the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine taking a heavy toll on the people. However, the recent blockade on humanitarian aid has only exacerbated the situation, leaving thousands of people without access to basic necessities such as food, water, and healthcare.

Ghebreyesus highlighted the severity of the situation, stating that “the blockade on humanitarian aid has resulted in a man-made mass starvation in Gaza, which is a clear violation of human rights.” He urged for immediate action to be taken to lift the blockade and provide essential aid to the people of Gaza.

The WHO chief’s statement comes in the wake of a recent report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which revealed that almost 90% of Gaza’s population is in need of humanitarian assistance. The report also stated that the blockade has severely limited the entry of essential goods such as food, fuel, and medical supplies, leading to a dire shortage of resources in the region.

The situation in Gaza is a humanitarian crisis, and it is the responsibility of the international community to address it. The WHO chief called for an urgent intervention by the international community to provide aid and support to the people of Gaza. He stressed that “humanitarian aid must not be used as a political tool, and the lives of innocent civilians must not be put at risk due to political conflicts.”

The blockade on Gaza has been in place since 2007, severely restricting the movement of people and goods in and out of the region. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine has only worsened the situation, with frequent escalations of violence resulting in loss of life and destruction of infrastructure.

Ghebreyesus also emphasized the need for a political solution to the conflict in Gaza, stating that “ending the blockade is essential for the long-term health and well-being of the people of Gaza.” He called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which would allow for the free flow of goods and services, as well as access to healthcare and other essential services.

The WHO chief’s statement has been met with widespread support from the international community, with many organizations and governments voicing their concern and calling for immediate action. The UN has also urged for the blockade to be lifted to ensure the well-being of the people in Gaza.

It is high time for the international community to take concrete steps to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The lives of innocent civilians are at stake, and it is the responsibility of the global community to provide aid and support to those in need. The blockade on Gaza must be lifted, and all parties involved must work towards finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict. As Ghebreyesus rightly stated, “the health and well-being of the people of Gaza must not be compromised due to political conflicts.” It is time to put the needs of the people first and work towards a brighter future for the people of Gaza.
