Greece, Greek Cyprus push unlawful, maximalist demands: Türkiye

Turkey has once again demonstrated its strong stance and unwavering support for the Turkish Cypriot community in Cyprus. On Friday, at the European Union leaders’ summit, the conclusions adopted clearly showed that Turkey will not stand by and watch while the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) continues its unjust and unilateral actions against the Turkish Cypriots.

The summit, which was held in Brussels, addressed various issues, including the ongoing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus issue. The leaders of the EU member states reached a consensus on the need for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the conflicts in the region.

However, what is most noteworthy is the clear and strong stance of Turkey, as reflected in the summit’s conclusions. The EU leaders acknowledged Turkey’s efforts in finding a solution to the Cyprus issue and called for the resumption of negotiations based on the UN’s parameters and within the framework of the UN Secretary-General’s Good Offices Mission.

Furthermore, the EU leaders expressed their concern over the unilateral actions of the GCASC, such as the recent opening of the town of Varosha, which has been closed since 1974. They emphasized that such actions are not conducive to building trust and finding a lasting solution to the Cyprus issue.

Turkey has long been advocating for a fair and just solution to the Cyprus issue, which takes into consideration the legitimate rights and interests of both Turkish and Greek Cypriots. However, the GCASC has continuously blocked all attempts at finding a peaceful resolution and has instead resorted to provocative actions that only serve to escalate tensions in the region.

The recent opening of Varosha is a clear example of the GCASC’s disregard for the Turkish Cypriot community. This move not only violates UN Security Council resolutions but also goes against the spirit of the ongoing negotiations. It is a blatant attempt to change the status quo in the region and create a fait accompli.

Turkey, on the other hand, has always been committed to finding a just and lasting solution that will bring peace and stability to the island. Our country has repeatedly called for the resumption of negotiations and has shown its willingness to work towards a solution that will benefit all parties.

It is also important to note that Turkey’s efforts have not gone unnoticed by the international community. The EU leaders’ summit conclusions clearly acknowledge Turkey’s constructive efforts and call for closer cooperation between Turkey and the EU to address the challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey has always been a strong supporter of the EU’s enlargement and has made significant contributions to the union’s security and stability. Despite the challenges we face, Turkey remains committed to its European aspirations and looks forward to further strengthening its ties with the EU.

In conclusion, the conclusions adopted at the EU leaders’ summit are a clear indication that Turkey’s stance on the Cyprus issue is justified and supported by the international community. We call on the GCASC to change its approach and engage in meaningful dialogue to find a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue. It is time for all parties to prioritize peace and stability in the region and work towards a future where both Turkish and Greek Cypriots can live in peace and prosperity.
